“From Forested Hills to Paved Plateaus “ is a series of photo digital montages, which began when I photographed a sign posted in a newly cut clearing in the woods not far from my home. Over six years I followed the evolution of this new “instant” community. It is emblematic of the explosion of real estate development and the resulting landscape manipulation happening in many locations across Canada. With this series I create an observation point from which to contemplate how society, our identity and the environment itself, are being changed and shaped by the way we clear the land, build our homes, choose our materials and surround ourselves with these newly fabricated spaces.
I am interested in our contradictory relationship to the landscape. On one hand seeking out its beauty in the desire to experience nature and purchase panoramic views yet at the same time completely exploiting this sought after commodity through deforestation, land restructuring and sprawling urbanization.
